The grey heron is a tall, long-legged wading bird found near rivers, lakes, wetlands, and coastal shores across Europe, parts of Asia, and Africa. Herons are a widespread group of birds with around 75 recognized species found on every continent except Antarctica. Like other herons, the grey heron has a long neck, thin legs, and a sharp, dagger-like bill suited for catching aquatic prey. When flying, it retracts its neck into a tight S-shape, creating its distinctive silhouette. Grey herons are patient hunters, often standing motionless at the water's edge until prey moyes within striking distance. Some have even been obseryed using bait, placing insects, seeds, or small flowers on the water's surface to lure fish closer.
