The white-nosed coati, sometimes called antoon in parts of Mexico, is a member of the raccoon family found across Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America. These curious mammals are easily recognized by their long, ringed tails and flexible snouts used to search for insects, fruit, and small animals along the forest floor. Unlike raccoons, which are mostly solitary, coatis are highly social and often travel in groups known as bands. These groups are usually made up of females and their young, while adult males tend to live alone and are sometimes referred to as coatimundis. Coatis are skilled climbers with extremely flexible ankles that allow them to rotate their feet and climb down trees headfirst.
