The western gull is a common seabird found along the west coast of North America and across the Pacific Ocean. These familiar birds are often seen around beaches, harbours, and coastal waters. Though not especially large, western gulls can reach a wingspan of up to 144 centimetres and typically weigh just over a kilogram. Like many gulls, they are opportunistic scavengers and will eat almost anything they can find. Western gulls usually feed at the surface of the water, picking up fish or scraps as they float by. They are also known to steal food, eat small birds, and happily take advantage of food left behind by humans.
