The grey seal is a large marine mammal found along the rocky shores of the North Atlantic Ocean. It belongs to the true seal family, a group of earless seals that lack any visible ear flaps. Grey seals gather in large colonies along costs and islands. While they move awkwardly on land using their short flippers in a crawling motion, they are powerful swimmers in the water and can dive to depths of around 300 metres for over an hour while searching for food. Their diet consists mostly of fish, and they must eat several kilograms each day to maintain their large bodies. Adult females usually weight around 250 kilograms, while makes can grow much larger, sometimes reaching 400 kilograms or more.
