The great white pelican is one of the largest species of pelican and among the most widely distributed. Pelicans are large water birds recognized by their long bills and expandable throat pouches used to scoop fish from the water. Unlike many seabirds, pelicans can live in freshwater, brackish, or saltwater environments, inhabiting lakes, rivers, wetlands, and coastal areas. Great white pelicans usually nest on the ground in large colonies, often on remote islands or isolated shorelines. Unlike the brown pelican, great white pelicans rarely dive for fish. Instead, they often hunt cooperatively in groups, forming lines to herd fish into shallow water before scooping them up in their large pouches.
