The Eurasian otter is one of the most widespread members of the otter family. It lives across rivers, lakes, wetlands, and coastal waters throughout Europe, much of Asia, and parts of North Africa. Like other otters, it has a long, streamlined body, webbed feet, and dense waterproof fur that keeps it warm in cold water. Their dens, known as holts or couches, are usually hidden along riverbanks or among rocks close to the water. Mostly solitary, Eurasian otters hunt fish along rivers, lakes, and coastal shores. They must eat about 15% of their body weight each day and can even overpower large prey such as waterbirds.
